How to Keep Yourself Motivated

Admit it. There are times when we lack motivation for work, for pursuing something we have in mind, and even just for getting up in the morning. Being able to motivate ourselves is part of having high EQ, and we all know how important Emotional Intelligence is in our lives. Without it, multifaceted success is difficult to achieve.

It’s like a match that you need to start a fire. It’s like a seed that you need to start growing a plant. Whether you realize it or not, you need motivation in your life to keep growing and making progress.

As an Emotional Intelligence specialist, I want all of us to keep ourselves motivated. I am sharing this blog article with you to help you motivate yourself. And when you already achieved that, you can also share this to others and motivated them as well. So, without further ado, here are the things you need to know to keep yourself motivated:

  1. Remind yourself of your goals. Create D.R.E.A.M. goals – Determined, Remarkable, Ended, Agenda-Based, Monitored. Remind yourself of your goals frequently. I recommend reviewing your goals at least every day and more frequently whenever you feel down or hopeless. It will help you remember why you started in the first place. A Vision Board, or a cork board with a collage of your dreams and goals is a great way source of motivation.
  2. Connect with your “Why”? Make a list of reasons why you want to achieve your goals. These reasons may be your family, friends, or community. Whoever or whatever they are, list them down. Sometimes we must create reasons to start doing something. Constantly remind yourself why this is important to you and make it a habit to look at this list every once in awhile.
  3. Reward yourself. Yes, give yourself rewards! It can be material rewards or a trip you want or a concert you want to attend. You deserve anything in the world for all the goodness and hard work you’ve done. Just remember not to always reward yourself because this might not result in motivation if it becomes an expectation. You’ll lose the essence of rewards if you overdo it.
  4. Have a good circle of friends. A network that will support and motivate you is one thing you need to keep yourself motivated. They will be there to lift your mood when you’re feeling down and tell you when to go and when they disagree.   5. Read motivational stories or quotes. Believe it or not, reading motivational material can motivate you in one way or another. People get to be inspired by something they find to be “relatable” or something that they find heartwarming. Go find the right content for you to help with the daily motivation you need.   6. Get rid of all distractions. Do not ever let distractions win. Focus on the task at hand and remove all distractions that get in your way. Distractions come in many forms… financial distress, relationship challenges, work-related conflict, stress and much more. So, beware of the shiny object! If you can’t get rid of them, recognize them for what they are, manage them and then get back on track!
  7. Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s the last but not the least. If you think you are pushing yourself too hard, then take a break. If you are getting sick of thinking how you should get things done, then do it step by step.
    Always keep in mind that success doesn’t come overnight and you will certainly encounter setbacks in achieving your goals. But if you think that you are experiencing too many struggles, it is time to relax. Read a book. Drink a cup of coffee. It may just take you an hour of rest to finally think of something brilliant that will overcome the challenge you are facing.

With all the tips I included above, I hope it helps you find the motivation to get going. Keeping yourself motivated may not be an easy process for some but each step can be a big help in achieving the success you want

MOTIVATION 101

What is Motivation?

In general, motivation is the desire or willingness of a person to do something. It is a psychological state wherein you are goal-oriented, have self-fulfillment, and have the desire to improve the quality of your life. Motivation is the result of your eagerness to achieve something. Are you aiming for success? Are you motivated? Continue reading for a Dream Life Journey on Motivation.

Sources of Motivation

What drives you? This question is short and simple. For someone who has a family, maybe his/her motivation is parents, siblings, kids or spouse. For someone who is studying, maybe high grades is the driving force. A working person’s inspiration can be pay incentives. Motivation, drive, inspiration, incentive…it may come in many different terms but these words describe motivation that revolves around two things – NEEDS and WANTS.

There are different types of needs. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, there are five:

1) Physiological Needs, or the needs of the body: food, water, breathing, clothing, shelter, and sex. These are the things we humans cannot live without.

2) Safety Needs, which include personal security, financial security, and health. After achieving physiological needs, we need to satisfy our own securities.

3) Love and Belonging Needs. This type of need is so important because as the quote says “No man is an island.” We feel the need to belong, to love and to be loved. We have the urge to feel that we are part of a whole.

4) Esteem Needs, which include self-esteem and self-respect. This type explains why it is normal for us to desire attention, fame, status, recognition, independence, strength, and of course, respect, both from others and ourselves.

5) Self-Actualization. This need is realizing a person’s full potential. This may not mean spiritually reaching the peak of your potential. Although for some, it may. Each one of us has different purpose, so this type of need has different meanings for people.

These needs are what keep us moving. We are humans. We are not constant and at different times we may need different things. When we are still babies, all we need is food, love, and care from our parents. As we grow older, we thirst for joy, knowledge, attention, and more. Our needs change and we cannot alter that; for change is inevitable. But, it is this need that can be a driving motivation for us.

Another thing that keeps people motivated is our wants. This differs to our needs as wants are the things we just desire to have but do not necessarily need. We need food but we want the latest smartphone model. See the difference? This concept is easy to understand because we face this everyday in real life. Also, remember that the needs of others can be wants to some and the wants of others can be needs to some. Wants keep us motivated because as people, it is human nature for us to do everything we can to achieve those things we deeply desire.

Motivation as a Key to Success

Daniel Goleman, the American psychologist who developed the concept of Emotional Intelligence in the 90s, pinpointed the 4 elements that make up motivation. These are:

  • Our personal drive to improve and achieve. To be called motivated, we have to have the mindset of achieving something and improving ourselves. It is the first step of success- proper mindset. Without this thinking, we cannot be successful in life.
  • Commitment to our goals. One answer to the question How to be successful?” is that you must be committed to your goals. By developing a fierce dedication, you let nobody stop you from achieving these goals. Shift by thinking of each hindrance as a challenge, and not a factor for you to stop reaching moving forward. When you honestly consider yourself as someone committed to his/her goals, then you are truly motivated.
  • Initiative, or readiness to act on opportunities, as well as optimism. No matter how big or small the opportunity is, grab it. Small opportunities might be your stepping stone to success. Big opportunities, needless to say, are a huge boost to your life in general. Moreover, positivity is also a secret to success and motivation. Surely, you are going to encounter a lot of problems, issues, and troubles along the way. Face each of them with a big smile on your face and say, “Challenge me.” You will find yourself motivated to continue merrily on your way.
  • Resilience. As mentioned previously, you are going to face a lot of challenges while aiming for success. If you failed on the first try, do not be afraid to start again. Recover from any  damage and rebuild yourself. Fall once, stand up twice. Motivated people have that as their motto. Make it as yours, too.

Why is it important to be motivated?

You will notice that some people are highly motivated while others lack enthusiasm. Which one are you? If you are the type of person who does things eagerly, then you are a highly-motivated individual and you should continue on this path. However, if you are the type of person who has no enthusiasm and finds yourself avoiding key tasks, then you may lack motivation.

Have you noticed that many people seem so half-hearted when they are working, studying or just performing routine activities. It may mean two things – they are not happy with what they are doing, or they are not motivated. For many, the issue may be their lack of motivation. In the workplace, decreased productivity is also a sign that motivation is missing. But why does it matter? So, why is it important to be motivated?

Motivation is a building block of Emotional Intelligence, or a high Emotional Quotient (EQ). Emotional Intelligence is the extent to which we are self-aware, can self-manage, can motivate ourselves, can express empathy, and possess social skills. Take note of the phrase, “can motivate ourselves.” Can you? At times, we look outside ourselves for motivation when true motivation comes from within.

Research indicates EQ can predict the success of a person more consistently than IQ can. In other words, your success is so much more than knowledge. Knowledge is a plus but your emotional skills can lead you to success and make the difference in your life. Just like the quote says, “IQ can get you a job, but EQ can give you a promotion.”

Motivation is important in identifying your goals. Goals are the result of a desire for change. Creating goals requires motivation. Motivation is what sparks your interest. It opens up your mind to change. It is the fuel source that powers your desire to achieve your goals.

Without motivation, positive change does not happen. You can’t make a great things happen in your life by approaching things half-heartedly. The only way to create something big, to build something brilliant, to construct something unforgettable, is to do it with enthusiasm. Reflect on your life. I would imagine the best things that have occurred are those where you were overflowing with motivation!

Motivation sets apart a goal and an action. Let’s say, you already have goals. So what? A goal cannot be completed without actually fulfilling it. Let motivation kick in and start bringing that goal to life! Success can never be achieved by just dreaming. You have to work at it with motivation and commitment.

Need to break through hindrances? Turn up your motivation to make progress. Motivation does not just help in creating the plan and taking action, but also in fighting through those barriers that are sure to surface. Every success journey is fraught with difficulties. Having motivation will help you overcome these difficulties.

Consistency is the key. If you want to create sustained success, be consistent. If you have already reached a high-level of success, how sure are you that you will remain there? Motivation is a key source of the consistency needed to have long-term success.

If your desire is to create sustainable success, reflect on your level of motivation. It could be the missing key to your success.

7 Ways What You Know May Be Hindering Your Success And What Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Has To Do With It

From grade school to high school and then on to college, we build up our bundle of knowing. At each level, we build our confidence and become quite enamored with what we know. After all, the alternative is not pretty. Therefore, we want to know as much as possible. And while that is certainly noble, it can also get us into trouble and can even hinder our success.

Knowing is a state of understanding. Something we all seek as we grow. However, the problem is that knowing is often based on beliefs or experiences. Think about that for a second. If we don’t experience it (personally or through others), we may not know it or believe it. How often have you heard someone say, “I know?” It’s even more curious when the “I do” is inconsistent with the “I know.” But that is a topic for a different blog post.

Follow me for a minute. Imagine for a minute that what you know is based on the faulty premise that we understand all that there is to understand around a specific situation. For instance, what is your favorite food? Most of us probably have an answer to this question. For me it’s seafood. However, consider that you have not yet experienced every type of food available. Given this fact, do you really “know” what your favorite food is? As you ponder this question, let’s look at a few ways what you know may be hindering your success.

  1. You stop asking questions

Knowing is that magical state where we are comfortable that we have the information we need. When faced with an alternative to what we know, it is easy to casually dismiss it because you already know. Recently a friend introduced me to an investment opportunity that sounded too good to be true. It was in the space of digital currency. I nearly dismissed it because of what I thought I knew. It turns out that I knew nothing!

  1. You accept your current situation

I talk with people on a regular basis that say they would love to be doing something else… something more exciting with their life. Yet, they are not. A little further probing reveals they have simply accepted their current situation because they “know” they cannot change it. Or that changing it would simply be too difficult.

  1. You confuse knowledge with action

What’s the point of knowing something if you are not going to act on it. In this case, do you really know? Or do you think you know? Granted it is quite possible that it may just be a conscious decision, but I can’t help but wonder.

  1. You give into fears

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “false events appearing real” as an acronym for fear. The key is they “appearing real”. You see the mind is powerful and has a built in protecting mechanism. Whenever it senses danger, it engages the defense system and you find yourself locked in a battle between you and yourself. Isn’t that amazing! When dealing with fear, the true enemy is within. This makes it even harder to deal with because the thoughts and concerns are yours. Ever notice how easy it is to help someone else with their fears… “you should just do it anyway.” But when it comes to your fears, it is an entirely different story. When you know something, you begin to believe it and your fears begin to feel very real causing you to pull back and remain in search of a more comfortable place.

  1. You limit your ability to solve problems

The state of problem solving requires identification of a problem. If there is no problem, there is nothing to solve. When we “know” we tell our subconscious there is no problem. Our subconscious in turn says, “thanks for the time off. I was tired anyway.” In effect, you have given yourself permission to “chill.” For example, you want a promotion but you know your manager will never give it to you. This state of mind shuts down identifying this as a problem. Once you identify it as a problem, you can approach it accordingly and develop a plan that will take you closer to achieving your desired goal… the promotion.

  1. You take your perception as reality

One danger of knowing is you begin to believe your own perception. It is not that this is always a bad thing but it is important at times to consider the perspective of others. Could it be that more than one reality exists but if you know, you are likely to believe the one perception you are familiar with… yours. I had an interesting conversation with an Uber driver a few weeks ago. He was homeless and felt certain that the system was designed to hold him back. His perception had become his reality and therefore he failed to look at alternatives that could potentially provide a new path for his life.

  1. You place a ceiling on your dreams

The interesting thing about knowing is you begin to believe how high and how far you can go. It is often predicated on your current understanding of how bad you want it. Pushing past your threshold may result in a bit of discomfort. Since one purpose of the mind is to protect us, you begin to set limits to keep you from feeling the discomfort…to keep you safe. Before you know it, you have erected new boundaries for yourself. Think about your goals. Are they within your comfort zone? Are they designed to keep you safe? Are they based on what you know?

Emotional intelligence (EQ) plays a key role in every decision you make; whether conscious or unconscious. It is intimately entwined in what we think we know. Having high EQ allows you to become comfortable acknowledging the limitations of knowing that impact the emotional intelligence pillars of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. Taking intentional action to improve these key areas can help you move past your perception of knowing. It requires a desire to explore options that may lie outside of your standard knowledge or belief. That doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily agree when you find alternatives. They may not be for you. But, the mere fact that you have taken the time to push beyond your comfort zone opens up a world of new possibilities.

When it comes to growing and pushing the boundaries to achieve unparalleled success, I would recommend that you forget what you think you know and open your heart and mind to what could be!
